Our Lady of the Angels


In Costa Rica, as in many other latin american nations, the advocation of the Virgin of the Angels, is very well venerated by millions of the faithful. By being the Patron saint of the Costa Ricans they call her "la Negrita" meaning the "Dark One." According to legend, the image was found by a high society girl in the year 1635. Every time that the image was going to be transfered from place to place, the image would dissapear and would re-appear moments later in the same location, near the place where she dwelled the image would appear in the form of a miracle. Before what was said before the image was left in the same place, it remained there up until a church was built in honor of Our Lady. While the statue remained there it is said that a Grotto of Holy water came about, and still to this day many Faithful who visit recieve the holy water and feel the presence of Our Lady.

Blessed José Sánchez del Río

Born in Sahuayo, Michoacan, 28 March 1913, son of Macario and Maria Sanchez del Rio, Jose Luis was murdered on 10 February 1928, during Mexico's religious persecution known as The Cristero War.The Cristeros were a large group Mexican Catholics leveled against the oppression of the regime of Plutarco Elías Calles. A year before his martyrdom, José Luis had joined the forces' Cristero »General Prudencio Mendoza, nestled in the town of Cotija, Michoacan. The martyrdom was witnessed by two children, one of seven years and the other nine, who later became founders of religious congregations. One of them is the Rev. Marcial Maciel, founder of the Legionaries of Christ, born in Cotija, who in the interview book "My Life is Christ" reveals the crucial role that his vocation would be to the testimony of Jose Luis, who was a friend . St. Stephen

Stephen was born in the 1st Century in Jerusalem. Stephen is the very First Martyr in the Catholic Church, this is why he is referred to as a ProtoMartyr. Stephen's story is in Acts 6:5-15 and Acts 7:55-60. Stephen was chosen by the The Twelve (Peter, Andrew, John, James, James,Phillip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, Thaddeus, Simon and Barnabas.)to be another follower and proclaim the " good news " that was Christ. Since Peter was made the Bishop and later Pope by Christ, he and the Twelve decided to make St. Stephen a Deacon. Stephen is usually depicted in the Deacon's Dalmatic also with the stones at his head and with the Palm of the Martyr(as we see above). Later on in the Acts of the Apostles it mentions where St. Stephen had traveled to Acts 11:19-20. While they killed Stephen a young man named Saul of Tarsus who had approved of the killing later proclaimed a mass persicution of any Christians.
