Pope St. Pius X

Image
On June 2, 1835, Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto saw the light of earth at Riesi, Province of Treviso, in Venice; on August 20, 1914, he saw the light of heaven; and on May 29, 1954, he who had become the two hundred fifty-ninth pope was canonized St. Pius X. Two of the most outstanding accomplishments of this saintly Pope were the inauguration of the liturgical renewal and the restoration of frequent communion from childhood. He also waged an unwavering war against the heresy and evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His overriding concern was to renew all things in Christ. Above all, his holiness shone forth conspicuously. From St. Pius X we learn again that "the folly of the Cross", simplicity of life, and humility of heart are still the highest wisdom and the indispensable conditions of a perfect Christian life, for they are the very source of all apostolic fruitfulness. His last will and testament bears the...

The City of Augusta (now Augsburg ) was situated in the northern part of the Roman Province of Rhtia on the Lech River , not far from its confluence with the Danube . It was an important Roman colony , invested with municipal rights ( municipium ) by Emperor Hadrian , where Christianity had penetrated even before the era of Constantine, as is proved , beyond doubt , the martyrdom of St. Afra . It is an indisputable historical fact that a Christian named Afra was executed in Augsburg during the persecution of Diocletian ( c. 304) by his unshakable faith and profession at an early period her grave was the object of great veneration. The so-called "Martyrologium Hieronymianum "which is a compilation of various calendars and lists of martyrs whose beginnings date from the fourth century, mentions, on 5 August ( in some MSS. , 6 or 7 August) , which suffered in Santa Afra the city of Augsburg and was buried there. While still a child Thomas was sent to St. Anthony's School in Threadneedle Street, kept by Nicholas Holt, and when thirteen years old was placed in the household of Cardinal Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Lord Chancellor. Here his merry character and brilliant intellect attracted the notice of the archbishop, who sent him to Oxford, where he entered at Canterbury Hall (subsequently absorbed by Christ Church) about 1492. Image
Dates of birth and death unknown. He was the son of Pope Hormisdas who had been married before becoming one of the highest clergy. However, Teodato, King of the Ostrogoths, who wanted to prevent the election of a pope connected to Constantinople, anticipate, and influence the subdeacon Silverio was chosen. The choice of a subdeacon as bishop of Rome was unusual. Consequently, it is easy to understand that, as the author of the first part of the life of Silverio in the "Liber Pontificalis" (ed. Duchesne, I, 210) recounts, appeared strong opposition among the clergy. This, however, was repressed by Teodato so finally, after Silverio h...

Their status as "man of God" is revealed mainly in the wonders of every kind that is woven with his life. The work itself, for individuals and entire communities. Lived about 850-800, successor of St. Elias, which certainly exceeds the number and striking miracles, but not by his personality and his religious influence.
